Inside the Motorhome: Narain Kartikheyan
Madrid, 2nd April 2003 The Indian driver Narain Kartikheyan is a truly star in his own country. He's one of the 10 most recognised sportsmen. The other 9 are all cricket players, the favourite sport in India. Narain has demonstrated to be one of the outstanding drivers in this 2003 Superfund World Series by Nissan Season. And he has given some exciting moments to his newcomer team Carlin Motorsport. Kartikheyan topped the list of times during the private testing held at El Jarama (11-12th March 2002) and he was the quickest driver in Free Practice 2 and in the Warn Up. Last Sunday, he did not complete the first race but he finished 5th in the second one. Bruce Joanny (FRA) is his teammate. He finished 4th in Race 1.
- How do you see the Series this year?
"Nowadays is the best single-seater competition Series before Formula One. The car sound is spectacular and the races are really competitive. It's what I really deserve in competition. There is no way to compare this with any other competition in Europe. With drivers like Montagny, Gene and Bernoldi I think that we are going to have a very tuff Season"
- Do the people in your country follow this Series?
" Oh yes! Very much! More than 20,000,000 million of TV Spectators follow these races in India! As I said before, the races are very competitive, with a lot of overtaking and all that stuff -- you know, technically these cars are equal. This is a real Driver's Championship."
- What is your goal this year?
"Carlin Motorsport is a very reputed team and they have entered the Superfund World Series by Nissan in order to succeed. I'm going to do my best to do it so. The start of the Season has been really positive, although I was very unlucky in Race 1. We change the rear and the front wing in the garage before the start of the race, and then the nose when I was in the grid. After all these effort I spun and I could not complete the race. Bruce grabbed some important points in his debut, that's very important for the Team".
- I remember that you tested an F-1 two years ago with Jordan. What can you tell us about this experience?
"That was in 2001. I tested with Jaguar Grand Prix as well. Just testing. The car is a lot more powerful but in the Superfund World Series by Nissan the driver is the one who really matters. Anyway, I was in all the headlines in all the Indian newspapers. There was a big noise in my country".
- You're a real star in India, I've heard -- more than a movie stars.
Narain smiles, and he doesn't say a word, but his engineer (Anthony), who is with us, adds:
"He's very popular in the India. He's one of the 10 most popular sportsmen; the other 9 are cricket players! People do recognise him, oh yes they do, and he has a very beautiful girlfriend.
