A well-time red flag had helped him to first place in the weekend's opening qualifying session, but the Brit needed no such help this time around, beating his nearest opponent by 0.27s.

Two tenths of a second apart, Rowland and title rival Matthieu Vaxiviere headed the field after the first half of the session.

Dean Stoneman and Tom Dillmann demoted the duo with five minutes to go, kicking off the hectic closing stages which saw the lead change several times.

Nearing the chequered flag, however, provisional pole was back with Rowland, who had overhauled Pietro Fantin's previous benchmark by a quarter of a second.

And Rowland's time easily stood as the session's best, with virtually none of the frontrunners improving with their final efforts.

While Fantin took second, Tech 1's rookie Roy Nissany was an impressive third, just 0.018s ahead of Dillmann and half a tenth up on Tio Ellinas.

Ellinas' teammate Gustav Malja made up an all-Strakka row two, with Stoneman taking seventh place.

Despite a last-second improvement, Vaxiviere could only manage eighth, with the top ten completed by Nyck de Vries and Aurelien Panis.
