Hungary FR3.5: Vaxiviere on pole for Race 2

Lotus F1 protege Matthieu Vaxiviere clinched pole on Sunday ahead of Race 1 winner Egor Orudzhev.

Frenchman Vaxiviere got his third pole of the Formula Renault 3.5 season lapping his Lotus car at 1'29.221 which was a mere 0.019 seconds off second place Orudzhev in his Arden Motorsport car.

The second row had Malaysian Jazeman Jaafar slotting in at third, the lead Fortec Motorsports car ahead of Pons Racing and Manor F1 driver Roberto Merhi. The Spainiard drove a fantastic race on Saturday.

Championship leader Oliver Rowland was only fifth while Swede Gustav Malja qualified sixth driving his Strakka Racing car.

Rowland topped the timesheets but Malja displaced him but Vaxiviere went fastest in the end to take pole.

The top ten was rounded off with Pietro Fantin at seventh, Tio Ellinas at eighth, Tom Dilmann at ninth and Dean Stoneman at tenth.

There was a brief red flag in the session when Tech 1 Racing's Roy Nissany stopped between turn six and seven and will start from the back of the field.

Race 2 of the Formula Renault 3.5 weekend is to start 13:00 local time.
