Ghiotto fights hard but gets no points in Race 1 at Alcaniz
Luca Ghiotto: “It’s been a difficult Saturday."
It’s been a very difficult and tricky run today for Luca Ghiotto at Motorland Aragon, as the Italian racer lined-up for for the second day of World Series Renault 3.5 activity at the Spanish venue. Both the first qualifying session and the opening race of the weekend didn’t satisfy the early expectations of the Vicenza-born man, fielded by the International Draco Racing team.
During the morning session, bad luck hit him hard with a DRS problem that prevented the #6 car from hitting its top speed on the venue’s long straight. In addition to that, Luca was blocked by two slower cars on his best qualifying attempts.
He eventually ended up with the 17th fastest lap time, good enough for a spot on row 9. Before the race, the team made some modifications to his Zytek-powered Dallara’s set-up, in an effort to get some positions back, but the decision didn’t pay its dividends and Luca was forced to content with 16th place. A result that clearly didn’t fit with the skills of the young Italian rookie who had scored a great fourth place finish in the opening round at Monza, two weeks ago.
Luca Ghiotto: “It’s been a difficult Saturday. After the bad luck we had in qualifying, the set-up for the race didn’t perform as we expected. Also, passing on this track is pretty difficult and it didn’t work out well for us. Now I have to cancel a day that I’ll never remember with much happiness and reverse my fortunes in Race 2. The World Series Renault has a clever schedule that enables teams and drivers to fight back with another qualifying session and race on Sunday… so I’ll start from scratch and I promise I’ll battle my way up to the front end of the charts”.
