Aragon F3.5: Fittipaldi grabs seventh pole of 2017
Pietro Fittipaldi followed up a successful weekend last time out at Jerez with pole position for Saturday’s Formula V8 3.5 race at Motorland Aragon.
Fittipaldi set the early pace with a 1m41.363s benchmark, while the rest of the field struggled to keep up with the Brazilian.
Championship leader Rene Binder had his initial quick time deleted after exceeding track limits at Turn 9, where drivers were trying to make up time by cutting the inside of the tricky downhill corner.
Roy Nissany went second behind Fittipaldi, 0.317s off the pace, before the cars came back out of the pits for the final frantic minutes of the session.
Nissany was then pipped for second by Diego Menchaca, as Fittipaldi went even quicker up front, with a 1m41.222s effort. Egor Orudzhev took second briefly, only for Menchaca to regain the spot moments later.
Binder then grabbed second behind teammate Fittipaldi on his last lap, with Orudzhev in third ahead of Menchaca.
But there was late drama for Binder as again he had his fastest lap removed for track limits at Turn 9, dropping him down to sixth in the order, and promoting Orudzhev to the front row.
