Great start in WSR for Jan Charouz. Second place on Sunday
The official reserve and test driver of Renault F1 team, Jan Charouz, entered his rookie season in World Series by Renault in great style. On Sunday he performed absolutely faultlessly at Motorland Aragon. Starting from third position on the grid, he run great race and finished second. His team mate Walter Grubmuller Jr. finished tenth and scored his second championship point.
At Motorland Aragon the weather conditions were on Sunday much better than on Saturday. Qualifying run on the drying track and afternoon race started in completely dry conditions. There are slight differences in Saturday's and Sunday's Formula Renault 3.5 races this season. Both races are scheduled for 44 minutes plus one lap, but on Sunday the drivers must attend mandatory pit stop and change at least two tyres (between lap 5 and 15). The cars start Sunday's race also with light aero set-up with low downforce.
Jan Charouz started the race from third position on the grid. He started really well and in the first corner overtook both drivers, that started from first line. Jan was leading the field until his pit stop in seventh lap. Jan's main rival, Sten Pentus, remained out for a further six laps before making his mandatory pit visit. Estonian returned back to the track just ahead Charouz.
Due to different set-up Jan was not able to attack first position in closing stage of the race, but he fully controled his second position. He scored valuable points for second place overall and also won the rookie classificiation.
Jan Charouz, P1 Motorsport racing driver: "The car was quite good today. Very constant all the race. We have also chosen a good strategy. I had a great start. I suspected, that Ricciardo and Pentus will fight each other in first corned, so I was waiting, what they do, and than I overtook them. Pentus was really fast today, so it is right, that he won. But I am also very very happy."
Walter Grubmuller Jr., P1 Motorsport racing driver: "Shortly after my pit stop I demaged my tyres by breaking little bit. It effected car control and I was not able to resist the pressure from my rivals and lost some positions. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with my debut in such a competitive and challenging series. Next round will host my favourite circuit at Spa-Francorchamps. I hope, I will move up to the front positions there. I would like to congratulate my team P1 Motorsport and my team mate Jan Charouz for second place."
Roly Vincini, P1 Motorsport principal: "Excellent drive by Jan today - he could have taken pole this morning had he managed to get a clear run in qualifying, and his performance in the race this afternoon was very impressive."
Antonin Charouz, manager: "Great result. We had some small issues, but in general it was dream race for us. I am really happy and I hope the season will continue in this vain."
