Debut race in WSR ended for Jan Charouz prematurely after the rival's error
The opening race of Formula Renault 3.5/World Series by Renault 2010 was affected by heavy rain. After the start the start from 19th position Jan Charouz moved up to the 9th place, but in the middle of the race he was hit by one of the rivals and with broken rear wing had to retire. Walter Grubmuller Jr. was classified was 10th overall and scored first point.
The heavy rain has affected already the qualifying session, that took place at Motorland Aragon circuit on Saturday morning. The P1 Motorsport drivers scored 12th (Grubmuller) and 19th (Charouz) time on the wet track because of the fact, that the qualifying session prematurely ended up after the crash of another car. It came in the moment, when they were ready to run their fast laps on new tyres.
Steady rain gradually getting heavier during the race, which was scheduled on Saturday afternoon. In challenging conditions, where drivers saw practically nothing for water sprays behind the cars going ahead, Jan Charouz showed his experience. While his rivals made mistakes and retired, Jan climbed up the rankings. After the first lap was a Czech driver on the seventeenth position and in the middle of the race he moved to the ninth position. But his effort foiled carelessness of one of the rivals, who blundered enteringfirst corner, spun and hit the car of Jan Charouz, that was running ahead. With broken rear wing Jan can not continue and had to retire.
Ninth place was today for P1 Motorsport team drivers cursed. Shortly after Jan's retirement his team- mate Walter Grubmuller Jr. muved up to this position and held it until the penultimate lap. But two laps to go he spun and ended in the gravel beside the track. Nevertheless, Grubmuller was still classified at the last points-scoring position.
Jan Charouz, P1 Motorsport driver: "I am very disappointed. Even though I did what I could today, I chose a huge portion of bad luck. It started in qualifying. When I pitted for new tires, rivals started to score their fast times. Then when I wanted to get back on track, the session was red-flaged, so I lost a chance to improve my time. In the afternoon race conditions were horrible. I did not see anything. Still, I'was running quite well, but error of the rival demaged my rear wing. I hope it will be better tomorrow."
Walter Grubmuller Jr., P1 Motorsport driver: "It was a crazy race. At some places there were centimeter thick layer of the water on the track. I am very happy that I won the first point, despite the mistake I made at the end of the race. In any case, I had a lot of small moments and it was a three-quarters of an hour of hard work in the cocpit. But the result is a great encouragement to me before Sunday's race. I hope I will be able to improve my result also in qualifying."
Antonin Charouz, manager: "Unfortunately, this also part of the racing. But Jan was really unlucky today. In the morning organizers have abandoned qualifiying session prematurely, so he had not the opportunity to go his fast lap and started from the back of the grid. In the race, then came a decisive collision. We must believe that tomorrow it will be better."
The second race of World Series by Renault/Formula Renault 3.5 will take place at Motorland Aragon tomorrow. The qualifying session begins at 9:15am, the Race Two starts at 2pm. You can follow it live on Eurosport 2.
