Motorland - Jan Charouz seventh fastest in opening
The new season of World Series by Renault kicks off at Motorland Aragon circuit in Spain this weekend (April 16-18). On Friday drivers completed two testing sessions. Jan Charouz entered the racing weekend in the great style. The series newcomer gradually improved his times and in the afternoon session he scored 7th fastest time.
The free practice 1 opened the first racing weekend of 2010 World Series by Renault at Motorland Aragon on Friday morning. Both drivers of P1 Motorsport showed again, that they are both able to atack Top 10 positions, what is their main target in the opening part of the season. Jan Charouz was only less than second slower than the pace setter Sten Pentus and scored 12th fastest time. Walter Grubmuller was only four hundredths of a second slower than his Czech team-mate and ended the session right behind him on 13th position.
While Jan Charouz again demonstrated in the afternoon session, that - after three years spent mostly behind the wheel of a sports car - he could very well re-adapt to the single-seater, his team-mate Walter Grubmuller Jr. struggled with technical problems and was not able to improve his lap times as he wanted. In the afternoon session Jan Charouz was more than seven tenths quicker than in the morning session and losing less than five tenths compared with Daniel Ricciardo, who was the fastest driver of the second free practice, he moved up to the seventh position.
Jan Charouz, P1 Motorsport driver: "In the morning the conditions were not perfect, it was cold and also some rain was falling in the middle of the practice. In the afternoon it was much better, because it was warmer. Already this morning I was quite happy, but it became even better in the afternoon. First we started on the old tyres but for the last ten laps we put new tyres. I achieved quite good lap times, but in the fastest lap I was in the first sector on the tenth of a second slower than in my fastest passage of this part of the circuit. Without that, the result could be even better. Nevertheless, the result is encouraging and I hope that in qualifying we will meet our goal, and we will fight our way into the Top 10."
Walter Grubmuller Jr., P1 Motorsport driver: "It was not so good day for me. I struggled all the day due to technical problems. Since morning I had problems with rear brakes and we failed to discover what happened. Afternoon on old tyres that was pretty good, but when we used new tyres, the problem appeared again. That's why I could not improve my times as much as other drivers. I hope that tomorrow I will have more luck and I will be able to show my potential."
The qualifying for the Race 1 starts on Saturday, April 17 at 9:45am and race 1 at 2pm, live on Eurosport.
