Championship leader Rene Binder made it a Lotus 1-2, as he qualified second behind his teammate.

Fittipaldi set the early benchmark of 1m41.695s, but was kept honest by RP Motorsport’s Roy Nissany and Binder, with the top three covered by just 0.246s.

However the session came down to the final four minutes, with just 0.383s separating a close battle from third to ninth position on the grid.

Binder briefly set the fastest time up top, but Fittipaldi swiftly demoted his title rival with an unbeatable 1m49.765s.

Yu Kanamaru in the other RP car went third, before Fortec’s Force India reserve driver Alfonso Celis Jr took over the position, but he eventually lost that place to Konstantin Tereshchenko in the Teo Martin machine who went just 0.026s faster on his final lap.

Behind that trio was yesterday’s race winner Egor Orudzhev, ahead of the Fortec of Diego Menchaca, and Orudzhev’s SMP Racing teammate Matevos Isaakyan.

The top 10 was rounded out by Nissany, who had his fastest lap time removed for exceeding track limits at Turn 9.
