EXPERIENCE COULD PAY DIVIDENDS FOR BRATT AT ZOLDER
Zolder in Belgium hosts the seventh and eighth rounds of the 2010 FIA Formula 2 Championship this coming weekend, 19th/20th June, an event in which category front-runner Will Bratt aims to make the most of his past experience at the 2.5-mile circuit.
Banbury-based Will, who took race victory at Zolder last year when he visited the track during his ultimately successful Party Poker Racing Euroseries 3000 Championship title campaign, has happy memories of the former Grand Prix venue and is aiming for more success just a few days from now.
Currently fourth in the Formula 2 driver standings, the 22-year-old has secured podium finishes at each of the last two events but during the most recent race meeting at Monza in Italy, Will would almost certainly have challenged for his maiden F2 win had it not been for a clutch problem.
"We're definitely aiming for another step forward at Zolder", said Will, "I'm going there focused on fighting for two wins, that should be the aim for every weekend from now on. Realistically, I should have had my first F2 win at Monza but the clutch problem ended those hopes. Hopefully at Zolder we can have a problem-free weekend, take away a lot of points from both races and hopefully a win.
"Zolder is a track which is quite technical, it took me a little while to get my head around it fully when I visited there for the first time last year in Euroseries 3000 but by the second race of the weekend we were able to dominate with a clear win. Once you have the car in the groove, it's a great track to drive so I'm really looking forward to going back there."
Situated north-east of Brussels, Circuit Zolder appears on the FIA Formula 2 Championship calendar for the first time this year and -- as during the last event at Monza -- will act as support to the FIA World Touring Car Championship.
Will is certainly growing in confidence behind the wheel of his Audi-engined, Williams F1-designed car ahead of the fourth event of the year. Nonetheless, the Michelangelo Search-supported racer isn't underestimating how tough it will be to fight for his first race win of 2010.
He added: "I'm not complacent ahead of the weekend but we should have a good chance of going well. As we've already seen this season, F2 is very competitive and there are some really quick drivers at the front. Hopefully though, my experience at Zolder from F3000 will pay dividends."
Free practice at Zolder will take place on Friday, 18th June, at 09.30 (local time) and 13.00 with round seven qualifying following at 16.45. The opening race of the weekend will get underway at 13.20 on Saturday, 19th June, with round eight qualifying and the second race scheduled for 09.45 and 14.00 respectively on Sunday, 20th June.
