Alex is presently with the Minardi team in Faenza working with team founder Giancarlo Minardi's fitness experts. He has been working out there twice a day for the last two weeks now and will stay on for another week or so. After which he'll return to Kuala Lumpur to continue the programme set for him in Malaysia's National Sports Institute. Alex will then take a short break over the festive period before resuming his fitness training up until a week before official testing starts for all F1 teams in early January 2002. Here below is an update from Alex in Faenza, Italy:
From: Alex Yoong in Faenza, Italy - 29th Nov 2001
" Well, it's going OK here...on the training front that is. I'm training twice a day. Two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening. Working on getting my overall strength up another level as well as doing a lot of cardio vascular work.
Other than that it's pretty slow here, for me that is. Darn cold too, between 1 to 10 degrees. For me there is not much to do here in Faenza, especially when you don't know the language. There are quite a few English personnel in the team and they start Italian lessons soon. Guess I'll join them too.
What was quite interesting is that I have been playing football with the guy’s in addition to my training. And a couple of day’s ago I was in the Minardi team at the annual Minardi team versus Ferrari team football match. Have to say we played well and Minardi deserved our 4-0 victory over Ferrari.
In the factory there is a bit of waiting going on as we await for the first car to be completed. There will be a mock-up ready next week and it will give me a chance to see what the new seating position will be like.
So far though there is a mood of quiet confidence going through the Minardi team. In the season just gone European Minardi had virtually no budget and only knew they were racing 6 weeks before the season started. For the coming season, although still not in the league of the other top teams Minardi will be much better prepared and I expect next year's car will be better. The wind tunnel figures have been quite promising. But as usual, it will depend as always on how much better the other teams get to, 'cause in Formula One if you aren't improving then you go backwards.
Finally, to all our Muslim friends 'Selamat Berpuasa dalam bulan Ramadhan' and to all Christians, Merry X'mas ! "
