Three teams and four drivers took part in the first day of testing at the Jerez circuit in Spain today. McLaren test driver Alex Wurz set the fastest time, clocking a 1:22.330 over 68 laps; nearly a second faster than the second quickest man, Renault tester Fernando Alonso.

It was Alonso's first visit to the Jerez circuit in an F1 car and the Spaniard worked on set-up before commencing a programme that included traction control and suspension geometries. Renault technical director Mike Gascoyne said it was a useful day. Alonso will continue at Jerez tomorrow and will be joined by Jarno Trulli.

Williams test driver Marce Gene was third fastest and Darren Turner, on track for McLaren, was fourth. More teams are expected to join the testing session tomorrow including Toyota, Jaguar, BAR and Jordan. Meanwhile Ferrari started testing at Mugello today with Luca Badoer; Michael Schumacher takes over tomorow.
