Alex Wurz, McLaren's test driver, claims that he had already signed a contract to replace Mika Hakkinen but the team changed their minds and signed Kimi Raikkonen instead.

Seemingly the team management knew for months that Hakkinen was going to take a year off at the end of 2001 and Wurz looked likely to be a contender for Hakkinen's seat, along with Sauber's Nick Heidfeld -- who is already under contract to McLaren - but the team opted for rookie Raikkonen despite allegedly reaching an agreement with Wurz.

The Austrian says he was offered a race seat at Prost amongst others but will reamain as tester for McLaren next season.

Hakkinen, meanwhile, remains adamant that he will not return to F1 with any team but McLaren.
