Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says that today’s Chinese Grand Prix one-two result was the perfect response to its Malaysian defeat.
Lewis Hamilton scored his second win of the season in Shanghai to extend his world championship lead, and Wolff was relieved that the race pace of his cars was stronger than the Ferraris.
“We were a little bit worried about how long we could run on the softs, but the pace was OK,” said Wolff. “Finally we went longer than Ferrari with some really impressive laps from Lewis at the end of the stint.
“On both tyres, the pace was good today. It was a deserved win.”
Despite the win, Wolff admitted that his team is well aware of the continued threat from Ferrari
“If you consider it wasn’t very hot today, which is something that seems to suit the Ferrari,” added Wolff.
“Consider where they were before, with their aggressive development over the winter, they are our strongest challenger, so you need to take them very seriously.
