Wittmann catches the eye as Austria F1 test ends with Rosberg on Top

Nico Rosberg topped the times on the second and final day of test at the Red Bull Ring in what proved to be a more productive outing for the teams after yesterday's rain.

After yesterday's eye-catching winglet on Susie Wolff's Williams, there were no revelatory bits of development equipment on display today, according to JA on F1 technical adviser Dominic Harlow, who was at the test.

Pirelli tried some new materials in some sets of prototype soft tyres with an eye to 2016. The feeling is that there was not much difference from this year's tyres, but that doesn't mean it is set in stone that they will remain largely unchanged for 2016. The tyres could do with being more on edge, with performance the reward for pushing, but degradation a price to be paid, so we can see drivers pushing to the limit and strategy options opening up rather than the "management" which we have this season which is proving a turn-off for fans and drivers.

Ferrari used a tyre laser on their car to measure the shape of the tyres, as homework for their wind tunnel model, which shows the level of sophistication in F1 today, while Force India had a new nose on the VJM08 driven by Pascal Wehrlein, as they prepare to launch their updated car in Silverstone.

Fernando Alonso was reunited with the short nose McLaren configuration after his first one, for the Austria GP weekend, was destroyed in the accident at the start on Sunday with Raikkonen.

With only two reg flags near the end for planned reasons of fuel run outs, everyone covered a high mileage with DTM champion Marco Wittmann getting over 700km in, driving the Toro Rosso. He impressed the team with his pace and consistency on a first acquaintance with an F1 car.

"This has been an amazing experience for me," said Wittmann. "I was surprised at the power of the car; if I compare it to DTM, it’s got quite a lot more power! I enjoyed the whole day, which was trouble free, so I was able to do a lot of laps. I’m happy with my day, I hope the team is too. I would like to thank Red Bull, Scuderia Toro Rosso and BMW for giving me this great opportunity.”

Rosberg stopped the clocks early in the afternoon with a time over eight tenths of a second faster than Ferrari's Esteban Guttierez.

Guttierez, on his second outing in the 2015 Ferrari, had a brief trip to the gravel traps in the morning but managed a total of 110 laps on a day when eight of the nine teams in action recorded three figure lap counts.

Valtteri Bottas's Williams was third, just under a tenth of a second slower than Gutteirez with a time set in the morning. Bottas's 79 laps was the lowest total of the day.

Fourth on his debut run in F1 machinery was DTM star Marco Wittmann who racked up a very impressive 158 laps for Toro Rosso, the biggest total of the day.

Pascal Wehrlein was one of the few drivers to do two days of testing and the only one to do it in two cars, the Mercedes tester managing fifth fastest time for Force India and the third highest lap total.

Jolyon Palmer took over Lotus test duties from Romain Grosjean, ending the final in season test just over three tenths of a second ahead of Fernando Alonso's McLaren Honda.

After a productive day for Red Bull, Daniel Ricciardo brought out the red flags with just over an hour to go. The Red Bull mechanics repaired his car and he took to the track for more running as the day ended.

Felipe Nasr propped up the time sheets for Sauber after recording the second highest lap total of the day.
