As suspected at the British Grand Prix weekend, Jaguar Racing announced on Monday 21st July that Justin Wilson will replace Antonio Pizzonia for the rest of the season. Wilson has impressed in his debut with Minardi and has been linked with Jaguar for some time. It was reported that Jaguar had tried to replace Pizzonia for the British GP but the deal fell through at the last minute.

Jaguar said in a statement today that Pizzonia had not fulfilled his potential so far this season and it was in the best interests of the team to replace him. The Brazilian has been offered a testing role but it's not yet been confirmed if he has accepted or not.

"We are delighted to have Justin join us for the remainder of the 2003 season in what is a richly deserved opportunity," said David Pitchforth, Jaguar's managing director.

"In the Jaguar R4, we clearly have a competitive car and one that has helped Mark Webber secure twelve points thereby taking the team to 6th place in the Constructor's Championship. With five races left on the calendar, it is critical that we are maximising our potential with two race cars."

Wilson will get his first taste of the R4 at Hockenheim for the German Grand Prix at the beginning of August. As Jaguar opted for Friday testing at race weekends, the Englishman will not have the chance to drive the car until then.

"I can't wait to get in the car at Hockenheim," said Wilson. "Of course it's not going to be easy jumping straight in but I'm absolutely determined to reward the team's confidence in me. Jaguar have such a fantastic motorsport heritage and I'm just so very proud to have this opportunity to join the team."
