Williams were the first team to resume winter testing yesterday at the Jerez circuit in Spain. After a late start, due to waiting for the track to dry after rain, Ralf Schumacher and test driver Marc Gene were in action, Schumacher the fastest with 1:20.831. The German completed 81 laps and Gene 30.

"After the New Year break, the team was the first to take to the track here in Jerez," said test team manager Tim Newton. "We are expecting Ferrari to join us tomorrow, and Renault the day after. It rained overnight, so the conditions were not exactly ideal and we really had to wait until 12.30 for a completely dry track."

"Not withstanding that, Ralf managed good mileage today, ably assisted by Marc. We will run at Jerez until Thursday, and should manage a constructive programme of work in this time."
