Williams blames rims for Massa tyre failures

Williams believes that rim failures were the cause of Felipe Massa's tyre problems in opening practice for the Chinese Grand Prix – although the team is still unclear about what led to them breaking.

The Brazilian brought out a session-stopping red flag after 25 minutes of FP1 following a spin at Turn 6, when his left rear tyre appeared to come off the rim and pitched him into a spin.

After returning to the pits and being sent back out on to the track, Massa suffered a repeat failure immediately afterwards – prompting the team to remain in the garage for the remainder of the session.

Investigations are ongoing about what caused the rims to fail, because their designs are unchanged.

It could be that damage was being caused by the brake duct, with mechanics being spotted closely examining this area of the car.

Williams will want to ensure it fully understands what happened and have taken all preventative measures before letting Massa and Valtteri Bottas back out on track.
