Antonio Giovinazzi will continue driving for the Sauber Formula 1 team in the Chinese Grand Prix in place of Pascal Wehrlein, the Swiss squad announced on Monday.

The Italian made his grand prix debut in the first race of 2017 in Australia as regular-season driver Wehrlein decided to withdraw from the event.

Wehrlein had missed the first pre-season test at Barcelona following a big accident in the Race of Champions earlier this year.

The German driver had injured his back in the crash and withdrew from the Melbourne event amid fears that he would struggle to complete the race due to not being physically ready.

He insisted, however, decision was down to his fitness and had nothing to do with the injury recurring.

Giovinazzi took over Wehrlein from FP3, qualified right behind teammate Marcus Ericsson and finished 12th in the race.

Wehrlein suggested he could also miss the Bahrain Grand Prix, which takes place just a week after China.

"For me the most important is that I can train intensively to ensure a 100 percent performance from my side as soon as possible," said Wehrlein in a team preview on Monday.

"I will then be well-prepared for my first complete Grand Prix weekend for the Sauber F1 Team. Hopefully this can be in Bahrain but, if not, then we will take the time it needs until Russia to make sure I am completely ready."
