Jordan continued their test at Silverstone on Wednesday in wet and windy conditions. Takuma Sato ran last year's car, the EJ11, with components from this year's car, and Giancarlo Fisichella drove the EJ12, the 2002 contender. The track was totally soaked after a night of rain and there were crosswinds along the straights.
Sato did a slow and cautious installation lap at the start of the session in last year's EJ11 right at the start of the session. Twenty minutes later he returned to the track for another lap, doing a practice start at Copse to test the launch control system. The conditions proved too treacherous though and he spun at Club but recovered, and the session was stopped while the track could be cleared.
It restarted half an hour later with Sato again doing a practice start at Copse followed by an installation lap. He was much faster round the circuit this time, and by now the conditions were much brighter.
The first timed laps of the day were run shortly after 11am, with Sato doing two laps in the mid 1m 40s. The Japanese driver did a massive powerslide at Luffield on returning to the pits, despite having the traction control system running. He returned for three more laps soon after, running a lot of a traction control even along the straights. He was joined for a lap by Fisichella in the EJ12, who was working on engine mappings.
The rain started to fall near the end of the morning as Fisichella was doing a lap, causing the Italian to back right off and drive back carefully. Fortunately the rain was only brief.
At midday the old and new Jordans were on track simultaneously, allowing the first opportunity for a direct comparison between the two. They both lapped at 1m 40s at first, and then only the next lap Fisichella improved by a whole second and Sato improved by half second. Sato was taking a very wide line through corners while Fisichella was sticking to a more conventional route. The Italian pitted after two laps, while Sato completed six laps.
Shortly afterwards both cars came out again, and the EJ12 lapped 1.2 seconds faster than the EJ11 at the same time. This was the EJ12's first serious run, with four competitive laps, the fastest of which was 1:38.20. The car looked extremely stable through all corners, and handled very well, despite the damp conditions.
Sato was soon back out and responded to Giancarlo's faster time by doing a 1m 38.08 lap. However on his fifth lap the session was stopped as Fisichella went off on his first flying lap, and the car was taken back to the pits under covers but noticeably without its rear wing. It is believed that Giancarlo left the circuit at or near to Stowe corner
After lunch Sato suffered a problem while doing a practice start at the pitlane exit. He was unable to get the car going and was towed back down the pitlane to his garage. The car was fired up a few minutes later and this time Sato successfully did a start and did an out-lap and an in-lap. By this time the rain was falling heavily. A few minutes later Sato did the same, with an extremely confident out-lap and a very cautious in-lap.
That was the final action of the day. After a circuit inspection at 3.30pm the pitlane was closed and the session ended. He conditions were too difficult for any more serious running, as the cars were aqua planing and the light was beginning to fade.
