Mark Webber is confident that Jaguar can achieve podium finishes and even wins but not for a couple of years yet. The team has undoubtedly improved after its rather dismal last few seasons and 2003 has seen Webber become something of a sensation with his performances in qualifying. Races have yet to quite produce the same impressive results but Webber believes it will happen.

"We can definitely achieve podiums in the next few years and I would judge how successful we've been by our speed and also our consistency to challenge for points," the Australian said in a webchat with ITV-F1.

"You have to remember what Jaguar were doing last year and we've clearly made some good steps forward with this year's car but we have to keep doing that in the next few years and we should be a force."

"I think we can win some races in two or three years. We will definitely be stronger by 2005 and again it's very hard to say what the opposition will be in that period. Williams could be like Ferrari are now, we don't know what's going to happen. If we control our own performances we'll clearly try to win a few races in that year."

For many, Ferrari is the marque that inspires passion and excitement and the team has a long and illustrious history. However, Jaguar has a certain cachet of its own; Webber thinks it would be a tough job for the Leaping Cat to be the 'British Ferrari' but he hopes to raise Jaguar's profile.

"There's no question about it that Jaguar do carry a certain atmosphere when the cars go onto the circuit," he said. "It's a very famous marque and to challenge Ferrari I'm not so sure that's possible because the history is also extremely strong there, but we can definitely lift the awareness and the tension even higher for Jaguar in the future."
