VW could enter Formula 1, Stern [Star], the German illustrated weekly, reported in a news item in its October 4 issue, quoting the incoming VW CEO, Bernd Pischetsrieder: "Everyone knows that I am a confirmed fan of Formula 1".

According to unspecified company sources, Stern says, VW motor development has nearly completed a motor suitable for Formula 1.

"But even if we would decide for an engagement today, it would take us three to four years to be out there", Stern quoted Pischetsrieder. Pischetsrieder had been CEO at BMW before being fired there over BMW's failed Rover venture.

Stern then speculated whether VW would enter Formula 1 under the name of Volkswagen or Audi, and if the corporation would buy it into Formula 1 by acquiring one of the less successful teams "like Minardi or Arrows" or by "supplying the motor to a team like Jordan or Sauber".
