Canadian F1 driver, Jacques Villeneuve checked himself into a Melbourn hospital complaining of back pain following the Australian Grand Prix. Villenueve's British American Racing Honda was was involved in the tragic crash on Lap 5 with Ralf Schumacher which resulted in the death of a track marshal.

The 1997 World Champion got airborne and flew into a fence-catching and then a retaining wall after making wheel-to-wheel contact with Ralf Schumacher’s Williams/BMW. Villeneuve was able to climb from the wreckage of his destroyed car and received a ride on a moped back to the pits. He later experienced back pain and decided to seek treatment.

According to a BAR spokesperson, "He has not gone because of the emotion over the accident, but because his back is starting to stiffen up."

"He is shocked and saddened for the family of the marshal. He did not know anybody had been killed in the accident when he got back to the pits."
