Vettel wants Ferrari to focus on car, not contract

Sebastian Vettel says he does not want to distract his Ferrari team with contract talks, insisting he will only start thinking about that next year.

Vettel's contract with the Italian squad expires at the end of next year, and recently Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene said the German had to earn a new deal after a difficult season.

Vettel, however, says he wants Ferrari to be focused on producing a winning car for next year and does not want contract distractions.

"I think we all are fairly busy at this time to focus on the four races we have left and on focus to prepare for next year," said Vettel ahead of the US Grand Prix on Thursday.

"I don't think it is important to look into details such as my contract. It is fine for next year.

"With a lot of things happening back at the factory and back at Maranello I know they are very busy and I want their focus to be there."

The Ferrari driver said the updates introduced by his team in the previous race in Japan had proven to be a good step that shows the Maranello squad is heading in the right direction.

"I think it was a step forward for Kimi and myself, it gave us good performance in Japan," Vettel added. "Japan was good test for the overall performance of the car.

"Overall it gave us a good indication for this year and there are always some things you learn. The rules are changing quite a lot, but every bit you understand about the car and how it works will help with the future."
