Jos Verstappen will become the first current Formula One driver to drive a Days of Thunder racing saloon when he tests the Havoline Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo at Rockingham on Saturday.
The test has been organised by the Minardi F1 Team and Dennis Klein of Team West-Tec, the Days of Thunder team that prepares the Havoline Racing Chevrolet for the oval- racing series. Verstappen will drive the car on Rockingham's 1.5-mile oval.
Dutchman Verstappen will link up with fellow countryman, Michael Vergers, who drives for Team West-Tec in the Chicago Pneumatic Racing Pontiac, during the test. Vergers, also known as the 'Flying Dutchman' by race fans, will assist Verstappen while he gets acclimatised to the 500bhp, V8-powered racing saloon during the Friday test session for the Trust presents Thunder At The Rock event next weekend.
Verstappen said of the forthcoming test: "I'm looking forward to trying the ASCAR, as it will be a new experience for me to drive a race car that has the wheels covered and also has a very large steering wheel. I have not been on an oval before, although I have watched races on television, and I have a feeling those concrete walls are going to look pretty close when you're out there. It is going to be a very different driving experience from my normal Minardi Formula One car, but that's half the fun."
Dennis Klein, Commercial Director at Team West-Tec, who like Verstappen and Vergers is also Dutch, said: "This is a great opportunity for Days of Thunder to showpiece the series to the best drivers in the world. I must thank the Minardi F1 Team, their sponsors, Trust and RIMS - Recruitment In Motorsport - for being so helpful in the organisation of this one-off test. As you can imagine, the Havoline Racing team are thrilled to have Jos drive the car. It's something they won't forget."
