Verstappen pins race hopes on safety car

Max Verstappen is pinning his hopes of a good result in the Canadian Grand Prix on a safety car that will help him close the gap to the cars in front.

The Toro Rosso driver was given a five-place grid penalty for his crash with Romain Grosjean in Monaco, and got a further 10-place penalty after having to use his fifth engine of the season.

Verstappen qualified in 12th position, meaning he will also get a 10-second time penalty in the race as he cannot serve his 15-place grid penalty in full due to his qualifying position.

The Dutchman admitted it will be a hard race unless he gets help from a safety car period.

"I knew it was coming, so we have to deal with it and try to make the best of it," he said of the engine-change penalty.

"For sure we have to do some overtaking. Hopefully a safety car will help us a bit.

"Everything is possible, so we'll see. It will be hard to overtake on the straights, but hopefully our race pace is good so we can come close to them out of the corners."

With Felipe Massa and Sebastian Vettel starting at the back of the grid too, Verstappen is also hoping to get help from them in order to move up the order.

"I hope I can be close to them. After a good start and hopefully a good first lap maybe that will help."
