Jos Verstappen is hoping the weather will be on the side of Minardi this weekend at the Austrian Grand Prix, along with a few retirements from competitors. While the first few races of the season were not kind to the Faenza squad, both Verstappen and team-mate Justin Wilson got to the chequered flag in Spain.

The Dutchman is not expecting to close the gap to other teams by much but will make the most of any opportunities: "The F1 circuits don't differ that much, we won't be able to close the 1.5 second gap," he told his website.

"The A1 Ring is especially hard on the brakes and not a lot of grip due to little use of the track. A combination of retirements and rain would be advantageous for us."

Tyres are always a consideration and while Minardi needs to improve its aerodynamics, new Bridgestone rubber will help. "New tyres are very important," said Verstappen. "It won't enable me to close the gap -- the aerodynamics are more important -- but the tyres do help."

"This season the only time I have used the new Bridgestone was in Imola. You should have seen the tyres in Barcelona, there wasn't much left of them."

Verstappen finished twelfth at the Spanish Grand Prix, one place behind Wilson, which gave Minardi its first two-car finish of the season.
