After a lengthy period of speculation and rumour Jos Verstappen was recently ousted from Orange Arrows and replaced by Heinz Harald Frentzen. With the first race of the season on March 3rd in Melbourne, it was presumed that Verstappen would be out of a drive for 2002 -- but according to the Dutchman he may be back behind the wheel quicker than people think.
“ I can't see into the future but nothing is certain." He said. "But I do believe that I will be driving in the coming season. What is this thought based on you ask? Well my gut feeling. I know for sure that if something happens in Formula One, that I will be one of the serious contenders to take over a seat. We have had talks with every team that is no secret, Mika Salo,(Toyota) for example, is charmed by my driving capabilities and experience. We just look at the opportunities at hand, that's all I can say about it at the moment. I can name a few other names, but nothing more!”
Verstappen also admitted he regretted turning down an offer from Ferrari, made when he thought his place with Arrows was secure. He is a long time friend of Michael Schumacher but did not reveal if the Italian team had offered some kind of role with them for the coming season. “ Who wouldn't like driving for Ferrari?” He commented.“ Look, I'm a close friend of Michael, we go on holiday together and travel together to grand prix's, but in the end the management of Ferrari calls the shots who gets a testing role at their team.”
On the subject of when he'll be back behind the wheel of a race car, he remained cryptic:” I'll expect to be driving this season, and maybe even sooner then many people may think.”
