Four teams were testing today at the Valencia circuit in variable conditions that cleared in the afternoon to give a track temperature of around 40C. Williams test driver Antonio Pizzonia set the fastest time of the day, clocking a 1:12.734 and putting in 96 laps.

Tim Newton, Williams' test team manager said: "A useful day working on cooling options, brake tests and a small amount of tyre work. We were happy with the reliability of the car and Antonio's performance."

McLaren tester Alex Wurz was second fastest, also putting in a lot of lap time with 99; the most of the day. Felipe Massa was on track for Sauber, working on mechanical set-up and simulating starts to fine tune the launch control. Sauber's test programme this week will include Bridgestone tyre work as well as aerodynamic and traction control testing.

Renault's test driver Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest. The young Spaniard worked on software modifications to the traction control system and had a useful day. He will be joined by Renault driver Jarno Trulli to continue work tomorrow.
