Allan McNish and Mika Salo took the 2002 Toyota F1 challenger prototype to Silverstone for the first time today. McNish lapped the circuit at a time of 1:31.644, while Salo was somewhat slower at 1:31.914.

The morning testing conditions were cloudy and cool, but the afternoon testing session was interrupted by rain.

While the team has done extensive testing this year, the car still appears to be well off pace. McNish's time is more than 11 seconds off Michael Schumacher's pole time this year, and five seconds slower even than the last-place Tarso Marques' Minardi's qualifying time.

At its only other comparable test, in Barcelona, Salo set a best time of 1:23.970 in some 135 laps. This time was slightly closer to 2001 qualifying times, but still over five seconds off the Spanish GP pole.
