Tomas Scheckter, son of 1979 World Champion Jody Scheckter, impressed this week in his first Formula One test in a Jaguar R1.

Driving at Silverstone, the 19-year-old clocked a time of 1:29.4 in the span of fifteen laps, less than a second behind regular Jaguar test driver, Luciano Burti. The feat is even more impressive when one considers that Scheckter had not only never piloted a Formula One car, but had also never driven at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.

Scheckter, has supplemented his Stewart F3 program with a drive in the McLaren Junior Team's F3000 car at Hockenheim, claiming a second place on his F3000 debut.

He is clear on his goals: "I would love a race contract with Jaguar, but I need to prove to them that I am quick. Then hopefully they can take up their option on me for next year."

Scheckter will, however, face stiff competition for the race seat, as CART front-runner Dario Franchitti has also tested with Jaguar, but a testing contract with the team could certainly be in the cards.
