Only two teams remained in Valencia on Sunday, Juan Pablo Montoya setting the top time for Williams and breaking the lap record into the bargain. Over 57 laps the Colombian set a fastest of 1.10.977 in the FW24, putting to rest some of the doubts expressed recently about the new chassis. Team mate Ralf Schumacher was second fastest.

BAR had four cars on track and both Olivier Panis and Jacques Villeneuve had problems with the new BAR004. Panis, who headed the BAR drivers in third, had an engine failure whilst Villeneuve suffered transmission problems that prematurely ended his day. Test drivers Ryo Fukuda and Anthony Davidson were fifth and sixth, both using the older 003 chassis.
