Stirling Moss admires Hamilton "the late braker" and expects third world title win

Stirling Moss has spent quite a bit of time with Lewis Hamilton lately and reckons that the 30 year old is likely to win this year's world championship, but has some mixed messages about the driver he sees something of himself in.

Moss, 85, was at the RAC Club in London's Pall Mall this morning to launch "My Racing Life" - a look back at his career on the 60th anniversary of his legendary Mille Miglia win with Mercedes.

The book has 320 images from his career as well as insights from the maestro, dubbed the greatest driver never to win the world championship'.

Moss has said on several occasions that he sees quite a bit of himself in Hamilton, particularly in technique,

"He's a late braker and I was always a late braker," said Moss. "What I like to see is that he really gets his foot in there quickly, he's very competitive. Once the race is on, boy, then he's really in there to win it. He's still jolly fast."

As for his prospects of winning a third world title this season, Moss reckons it is on the cards,

"I think he probably will. He’s got the right engine. You’ve got to have a Mercedes to win. He’s got that, he’s got the skill. He has a lot of experience.

"I don’t think Nico will ever beat him, actually."

However, speaking to the Fleet St media a little later on he questioned whether Hamilton can yet be considered a 'great'.

“I don’t think Lewis is great yet. We know Vettel is in there, and Alonso. And Lewis is slightly less valued than someone like Jim Clark, but he’s certainly on the way.

“I would think if he clinches the title this year then he would be considered the same but you have to be very careful... It’s very difficult to appraise it.”
