Sir Jackie Stewart thinks Rubens Barrichello is capable of winning the Driver's championship but it's down to Ferrari to give him the chance. Barrichello drove for Stewart Racing in the late nineties and his former boss believes the Brazilian is a match for current champion Michael Schumacher. However, with Schumacher's number one status at Ferrari, Barrichello is unlikely to take the title while the German is there.

"I thought Rubens drove tremendously last season," Stewart said in the British press. "As well as, if not better than, Michael. And I sense he has acquired the mental toughness any driver needs to succeed at this level. The problem, of course, is that while Michael is there he is the number 1. It is very much down to Ferrari."

Stewart knows that Schumacher is favourite for the title this year and any driver is going to have a tough time beating him. But the Scot is convinced of Barrichello's talents and thinks there's always a chance for the unexpected to happen.

"I know Rubens well. He is a good man as well as a very talented racing driver," he commented. "I know you will get the best out of him if he feels he is getting the support and opportunity he needs. Of course, Michael has to start favourite and it would be very difficult for Rubens or anyone else to buck the trend, but you never know. Stranger things have happened."
