Michael and Ralf Schumacher will compete in the San Marino Grand Prix today but will be exempt from race formalities, due to the sad death of their mother in the early hours of this morning. The FIA issued a statement that said the brothers would not have to take part in any ceremonies.

"The FIA wants to extend its sympathies to Michael and Ralf Schumacher following the death of their mother, Elisabeth Schumacher. It is for this reason that Michael and Ralf will be exempt from any ceremonies before and after the race."

Michael and Ralf left Imola immediately after qualifying yesterday to be by their mother's bedside. The brothers returned to the circuit this morning but remained in their motorhomes. They will not have to take to the podium, should either finish in the top three, or the post-race press conference.

Motorsport.com extends sincere sympathies to the Schumacher family.
