Just days after his controversial victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher has won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award. The four time world champion beat previous winner Tiger Woods as well as cyclist Lance Armstrong, Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe and sprinter Maurice Greene.

Juan Pablo Montoya won the Laureus Newcomer of the Year for his debut 2001 season with the BMW Williams team. Montoya claimed his first Grand Prix win at Monza as well as three pole positions.

Other awards included French and Australian Open tennis champion Jennifer Capriati winning Sportswoman of the year and Goran Ivanisevic Comeback of the Year, for taking victory in the men's singles finals at Wimbledon.
