Despite there being some concern that the newly resurfaced track at the Circuit de Catalunya was too slippery for testing, four teams were at work at Barcelona on January 18th. Michael Schumacher made his first appearance of 2005 and set the best time of the day, 1:14.834 according to Ferrari. The German worked on tyres and new components.
Mark Webber and Antonio Pizzonia followed on for Williams in second and third respectively. The team continued with its programme of driver evaluation and also worked on development parts for the new FW27. "The track at Barcelona has recently been re-surfaced and today marked its first official test session," said Williams test team manager Tim Newton.
"The new asphalt was considerably slippery for Mark and Antonio on their initial outings but grip level gradually started to improve with the continual laying of rubber. There are some bumpy parts on the track but we are in discussion with the circuit management regarding these problem areas."
"We won't be able to commence work on tyre testing until we've clocked up some more miles and laid some more rubber on the track. We'll continue in this vein over the next couple of days and hope for some more productive testing as the week progresses."
Jarno Trulli was the quicker of the two Toyotas on track, fourth fastest to teammate Ralf Schumacher's seventh at the bottom of the time sheet. Red Bull Racing was the other team present, David Coulthard setting the fifth best time and Vitantonio Liuzzi was sixth overall.
Meanwhile, Minardi commenced its test programme at Misano but was hampered by poor weather conditions. New signing Christijan Albers completed 57 laps before being bought to a halt by a hydraulic problem. Nicky Pastorelli was also due to be on track but repairs couldn't be completed in time. He will be behind the wheel tomorrow morning.
