Michael Schumacher is impressed by the work being done by McLaren and the team's tyre supplier, Michelin. Both Ferrari and McLaren were testing at the Valencia circuit in Spain last week, where Schumacher and team mate Rubens Barrichello traded fastest times with McLaren's David Coulthard and test driver Alex Wurz.

"I have been impressed by the step forward carried out by McLaren," Schumacher told Gazzetta dello Sport. "I think it is due above all to the good work done by their tyre supplier. But on the other hand, I have already said that I expect a closer championship."

Ferrari has been working on a tyre programme for its supplier, Bridgestone, with Schumacher carrying out rain tyre tests on the artificially watered Valencia circuit yesterday. The German will return to testing duties at Barcelona on Monday.

Ferrari and McLaren are both likely to start the 2003 season with modified versions of last year's chassis'. McLaren's new MP4-18 has reportedly taken a bit of a beating from the latest batch of FIA regulations, which included the banning of two-way telemetry, traction and launch control and automatic gearboxes.

The telemetry ruling is effective immediately, the other changes come into force at the British Grand Prix in July. The new F2003 is due to be run some time this month and Ferrari will make a decision afterwards which car to take to Melbourne for the season opener at Albert Park.
