Michael Schumacher was delighted to end the season in the best possible way with another one-two finish for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro and his eleventh win of the year.
"I could not ask for more after such a season," said the world champion. "I mean we have been so successful, we have been on the podium in every race, finished every race, we had such a lot of wonderful moments -- so why not just enjoy them and don't ask for more for now."
"All in all it has been a great season," was Michael's view of the year. "I think at the end of it we should just enjoy the situation we are in. Especially as we finished it so nicely in the home race for Bridgestone who put such a strong effort in bringing a new tyre here which was really very good. I am happy for them, I am happy for all of us. The praise for this season also should go to our mechanics who brought a strong and reliable car to every race. Without them and the work which is done back in Maranello we would have never achieved this. So I only can say thank you for the extremely good teamwork we had. It will be very hard if not impossible to ever repeat this."
With the championships decided so long ago, Schumacher was able to enjoy the drive. "I love this track anyway, and if you are able to drive it in a car like this, then it is just pure fun."
Even at the end of the weekend, the press corps seemed fascinated by the idea of the team keeping in touch with Technical Director Ross Brawn back in Europe. "I think he is a little bit sad not to be here with us and celebrate this season," explained Michael. "At least we have the Misano day next weekend, where there will be the next big party with all our tifosi, so he will not miss that opportunity. But as we said before, he has been fully connected to us over the weekend and we are happy to have Vodafone on board who put a lot of effort in this, so in a way he was with us all the time. With the long season over, Schumacher is looking forward to a break, but he still has some work to do for the team. "We have Misano and then there are some additional appointments."
In Formula1 the work never really stops and the race winner was quizzed about next year's Ferrari car. "I don't know much yet," he admitted. "But I am sure it will be a step forward. How much more forward, who knows. But in general I am sure the situation will not stay as it is as I expect the opposition to close the gap. We did it, so I am sure they can do this as well."
With those remarks, Michael Schumacher left the press, no doubt to enjoy the traditional Japanese end of year party in the Circuit Hotel.
