Former Skip Barber Race Series winner Antonio Pizzonia holds the quickest time as testing for the nascent 2002 Formula One season enters day two. Driving a Williams- BMW, Pizzonia set the quickest time at the Circuito de Catalunya outside of Barcelona on the first day of testing on Monday, Jan. 7. F1 teams returned to the track after a rules-mandated sabbatical that began immediately following the final Grand Prix in Japan last October. His quickest lap was clocked at 1:20.033 sec. in a day where he completed a total of 66 laps.

Pizzonia stood down on the second day to allow fellow Skip Barber alumnus Juan-Pablo Montoya some seat time in the Williams racer. 2001 runner-up David Couthard set the pace though he was unable to match Pizzonia’s time from the first day, though the Scot’s day was hampered by rain. Montoya in his first time back in the car set the eighth fastest time for the second day.

Pizzonia’s task was to put miles on Michelin’s’ 02 rubber in a 2001-spec car. He led the times from the beginning of the day and would never be bettered despite seasoned drivers like, Coulthard, Alex Wurz, Williams teammate Ralf Schumacher, and Eddie Irvine among others. Michelin is an official partner of Skip Barber, LLC.

Pizzonia will continue his testing duties for Williams throughout the year while also attempting to fight for the 2002 FIA Formula 3000 title.
