1994 Barber Pro Series racer Juan Montoya turned in his best qualifying session of the F1 season to earn the fourth position for tomorrow's Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos. The BMW-Williams driver had to regroup after a spin during his first lap of qualifying. When his car broke loose and shot off the track, Montoya slid across a gravel trap and into a tire wall. The Columbian hopped uninjured from the car, ran across the track (with the approval of a track marshal) and began the trek back to his garage from the most remote point of the track. It took him 15 minutes, but when he got there the team had the back-up car ready for him. His second full run resulted in a time of 1:14.165 sec. which held up for the fourth spot.

The Colombian rookie, 1999 CART champion and 2000 Indy 500 winner had set the fastest time in practice at 1:13.963 sec., the only driver to that point under the 1:14 barrier.

Montoya's record in the Barber Pro Series is as follows:

- Third in Championship with 114 points

- Two race wins (Miami, Mid-Ohio)

- One pole (Mid-Ohio)

- Three fastest race laps (Miami, Mid-Ohio, Road America)
