During a week of testing at Valencia, Formula Dodge standout Antonio Pizzonia had reason to be optimistic about his chances in the pinnacle series of motorsport. The Brazilian racer, who signed on to be a second tester for BMW Williams F1 in December, upstaged 1993 Barber Pro Series racer Juan Pablo Montoya when he achieved the fastest lap time of all three Williams drivers. Pizzonia's fastest lap time of 1:14.359 sec. was the fourth best overall for the day.

Besides the strong lap time, the team was particularly pleased with the 21-year-old Pizzonia's consistent performance over a long distance. No problems occurred during his total of 81 laps.

Montoya, on the other hand, had to be satisfied with 42 laps. A technical problem with the engine ancillaries forced the 26-year-old Colombian to make an unscheduled pit stop, ending his chance to eclipse his new colleague.
