Wednesday the BMW-Williams team announced the worst kept secret of the season, namely that Skip Barber grad Juan Montoya was headed to Formula 1. Several media outlets released the news as if it were a hot scoop. The story surprised few, least of all us at Skip Barber. We knew him back in the day. Years before his CART poles and victories, before he won the Indy 500, before his ascension to Formula 1, Juan Pablo Montoya was just another student. And of all the places the promising young racer could have gone to enhance his talent, he chose the Skip Barber Racing School.

Here is a snapshot of Montoya's racing career leading up to yesterday's announcement. 1994 Barber Saab Pro Series; 1998 won Formula F3000 European Championship. 1997 FIA Formula One Williams Test Driver, 1999-2000 CART Driver for Target Chip Ganassi. 2000 won the Indianapolis 500.

His record in the Barber Saab Pro Series is as follows:

Third in Championship with 114 points

Two race wins (Miami, Mid-Ohio)

One pole (Mid-Ohio)

Three fastest race laps (Miami, Mid-Ohio, Road America)
