As has been widely predicted in the Formula One paddock over the past weeks, Sauber today announced that the team had signed the young Brazilian driver Felipe Massa for the 2002 Formula One season.

Massa, who recently clinched the European Formula 3000 championship, has shown strongly in several Sauber tests recently, matching the performances shown last year by Kimi Raikkonen, who recently signed with McLaren for next year.

"By deciding on [Massa] we have once again opted for a talented young driver," said Peter Sauber. "He convinced us with his excellent performance during tests at Mugello, where he demonstrated his promising potential in a remarkable manner."

Unlike many of his countrymen who aim for CART through Atlantics and Indy Lights, Massa set Formula One as his ultimate goal, and worked his way through the F3000 championship in Europe. He now joins his fellow Brazilian Rubens Barrichello in the ranks of F1 drivers for 2002.

"I am delighted that I will be working with Team Red Bull Sauber Petronas next year," Massa states. "I hope that I will be able to contribute to the team's success and help it to defend this year's outstanding position in the World Championship for constructors."

Sauber is currently fourth in the Constructors' Championship, behind only Ferrari, McLaren and Williams -- the teams best-ever performance.
