Team Sauber Petronas has completed a successful rollout of the new Sauber Petronas C21 in Fiorano, Scuderia Ferrari's team home track in Italy. The C21 is an all-new contender, evolved from the highly successful C20 that brought the team fourth place in the 2001 FIA Formula One World Championship.
Jacky Eeckelaert (Head of Vehicle Engineering): "We started running at 9am yesterday and Nick Heidfeld completed 59 laps. He reported no problems and achieved a fastest lap of 1m 00.59s. Felipe Massa drove the C20 at the same time so that we could make valid comparisons between the performance of the two cars, and also to continue his training.
Nick should have continued driving the C21 this morning, to finalise the acquisition of data prior to Felipe having his first turn at the wheel in the afternoon. Unfortunately a thick layer of snow fell overnight, which curtailed our rollout program."
Willy Rampf (Technical Director): "Our primary aim with the C21 has been to further improve the car's aerodynamics, to revise the weight distribution, to lower the centre of gravity and to further optimise the gearbox and suspension.
Despite the subsequent weather we have had a very successful rollout. From the installation lap and the first run right to end of the day, the new C21 ran with complete reliability 59 laps. We checked all the systems, and detected no problems, and our first set-ups and data measurements were extremely satisfactory. Our only disappointment was to see the snow this morning!"
Nick Heidfeld:" I completed 59 laps I have a real good feeling with the 2002 car. The engine never stopped and the car was never towed back to the pit during the entire day. This is a first contact and I need more mileage overall, but my first impression of the new car is very favourable.".
Felipe Massa: "Yesterday was a good day overall for me as I learned Fiorano. I covered 66 laps in the C20. My fastest lap was 1.01.42 and I completed yesterday the full programme that we had scheduled with the C20. Now I'm desperately looking forward to the real test with the C21 in Barcelona next week as the weather has not been really helping here!"
The C21 was first fired up at Hinwil, prior to dispatch to Fiorano, where it ran unbranded as the team's car and 2002 programme will be announced at the official launch on coming January 25. Team Sauber Petronas's 2002 test programme will continue in Barcelona on January 21-23 and January 29- 31, the week after the launch of the C21 near the factory in Duebendorf (near Zürich - Switzerland).
