Team Sauber Petronas began its final three-day test of the 2002 racing season in Mugello today, in preparation for the last round of the FIA Formula One World Championship in Japan on October 13. Felipe Massa, who will return to the cockpit for that race, tested the Sauber Petronas C21 in Italy today and will continue tomorrow, before Nick Heidfeld completes the running on Thursday. Felipe set a fastest time of 1m 25.310s, after covering 72 laps.

Giampaolo Dall'Ara (Head of Test Team):

"We were pleased with the results today. The purpose of this test is once again to continue a similar theme of intensive aerodynamic development work. Accordingly, Felipe tried a number of set-ups and we were satisfied with the results so far. He will continue with them tomorrow as well. "

Felipe Massa:

"It felt really great to be back behind the wheel of the Sauber Petronas C21 today. It took a while for the track to reach its best condition this morning but after that it was really good. I was very happy to be carrying out valuable development work in readiness for the Japanese race. We tried a number of different set-ups and aerodynamic components today, and have a good direction to follow tomorrow."
