Sauber are on the lookout for a big name manufacturer to partner the team and hopefully challenge the likes of McLaren and Williams in the future. Peter Sauber has been in contact with Volkswagen boss Bernd Pischetsrieder amongst others and although he is currently happy with Sauber's supply of year-old Ferrari engines, he wants to keep his options open.

"There are contacts with the owner of Volkswagen, Bernd Pischetsrieder. It is true," Sauber said in the German press. "We are of course in contact with other manufacturers. I am always interested in finding a big partner. This does not only include those who are currently in F1 racing, but also those who are not there yet. We have to keep our options open."

"We have proved to be competitive without the help of a manufacturer, but certainly a partnership would put us in a position to challenge the top three. This means our team would then not be the best of the rest, but would also challenge McLaren or Williams."

Sauber surprised many by taking fourth in the Constructors' standings last year and have run well again this season, although have dropped to fifth behind Renault. Nick Heidfeld and Felipe Massa have gained eleven points between them and next season Sauber is taking on Heinz-Harald Frentzen to replace Massa. The recent trend toward young drivers is slowly being replaced by a return to wanting experience over enthusiasm.
