The 2003 Sauber C22 got its chance to sound off yesterday when it was fired up for the first time at the team's base in Hinwil. The Sauber and Ferrari staff in attendance got to hear the engine for the first time and the all new C22 was described by boss Peter Sauber as perfect. The chassis, which is a new concept rather than an evolution of last year's C21, will take to the track at Fiorano on Thursday.

"Perfect, fascinating, a picker-upper," Sauber told Blick. "No hitch, the gears could be shifted easily, the temperatures were correct, and the clutch worked perfectly. Here there has been no cloning, for the first time, everything is new and the differences in full sight!"

While Nick Heidfeld will run the new car at Fiorano, his former team mate Felipe Massa has recently been linked with the spare race seat at Minardi. Sauber offered Massa a test role after dropping him as race driver in favour of Heinz-Harald Frentzen but the Brazilian is still without a drive for 2003.

Sauber was disbelieving of the speculation about Massa going to the Faenza based squad: "Now there are even rumors that Felipe is driving for Minardi," he said. "That I can hardly imagine, since Massa never wanted to drive for a bad team."
