Team Sauber Petronas began a three-day test with the new Sauber Petronas C21 at the Circuit de Catalunya today. Nick Heidfeld drove the new car to the second fastest time of the day in 1m19.585s, only two-tenths of a second slower than the new McLaren. Nick will continue the test tomorrow, with Felipe Massa taking over on Wednesday when he will have his first experience of the C21.

Willy Rampf (Technical director): "Our programme today centred on aerodynamic measurement and evaluation, together with systems checks of the C21. We did not get in as many laps as we had hoped, but that can be the case when you are carrying out this sort of work establishing the performance baselines with a new car. "We will continue this programme tomorrow, and will also conduct tyre tests for Bridgestone."

Nick Heidfeld: "The C21 feels positive and very responsive to set-up changes, which is always gratifying. I enjoyed myself a lot today, and we are all encouraged by our lap times." <pre> Times:
