IMOLA, ITALY, April 7, 2000 - Lucky Strike Reynard BAR Honda experienced decidedly mixed fortunes during the first day of practice for this weekend's San Marino Grand Prix. Ricardo Zonta put in 37 laps in the course of the two one-hour sessions and spent most of the day successfully honing the chassis set-up of his car for Sunday's race. Despite his mechanics executing a very quick engine and gearbox change between the sessions, Jacques Villeneuve's efforts were unfortunately thwarted by technical difficulties that prevented him from doing any meaningful running.
Position: 22nd Fastest lap: DNR
"It hasn't been a good day, and it now means we will have to treat tomorrow like Friday in terms of setting the car up. I don't know whether the problem in this afternoon's session was the engine or gearbox, but hopefully we've got all the bad luck out of the way today and can make some good progress for the rest of the weekend."
Position: 17th Fastest lap: 1:29.097 Speed: 199.319 km/h
" It is my first time ever here at Imola and although it is not a difficult track to learn, it is hard on the car over the curbs. My lap times were quite good in the morning and we particularly improved in the slow corners. I'm reasonably happy with the balance of the car, but on my fastest lap today I made a mistake that cost six-tenths of a second, so we should have finished higher up the time sheets. We want to do better tomorrow."
Chief Designer, British American Racing
"It's been disappointing really, particularly with Jacques losing virtually the whole day's track time. We've now made the rest of the weekend hard on ourselves because we are going to be playing 'catch-up'. Ricardo spent most of the day working on his race set-up and made good progress, though, so the goal for tomorrow will be to make up the lost ground with Jacques and give both drivers the best chance possible to qualify well."
RON MEADOWS, Team Manager, British American Racing "The boys did a really good job to change an engine and two gearboxes between the sessions today and it's a shame there was a problem with Jacques' car this afternoon. He's a world-class driver, though, and he knows this circuit well, so I'm sure he'll bounce back if he can get a good run tomorrow."
